Technical folx often don't negotiate, and when we do, we often undersell ourselves. Over the course of our careers, missed opportunities to ask for more financially can add up to a substantial loss. In this talk, I'll go over best practices for negotiating; highlight some key issues for women and under-represented minorities specifically; and address how to prepare for different types of negotiations. There will be some exercises to help audience members identify specific areas to practice or research in preparation for a possible upcoming negotiation.


Marisa Brandt

Marisa was most recently VP of Engineering at White House Custom Colour, where her teams develop and support a mix of internal applications, software that enables professional photographers to better serve their clients, and direct-to-consumer applications. Prior to joining WHCC, Marisa led two infrastructure and devops teams at the University of Minnesota. She has also served as COO for an early-stage IoT startup and as Head of Product Strategy for Dell’s Cloud Manager software. Earlier in her career, Marisa supported enterprise and large institutional customers as a system administrator, solutions architect, and cloud engineer. Her hobby is collecting graduate degrees: she has an M.A. and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota, and an M.B.A. from the Carlson School of Management.
